UntitledU.S. Sponsors Two Workshops on Trafficking in Persons

October 11, 2007

AMMAN – Jordanian judges and prosecutors today began participating in training workshops at the Judicial Institute in Amman on awareness, investigation and prosecution of human trafficking and forced labor cases.  The workshops are sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice in cooperation with the Government of Jordan and the Judicial Institute and will be conducted by two U.S. attorneys, Demetri Jones and Kevin Koliner, with experience prosecuting Trafficking in Persons (TIP) cases.

In remarks at the opening workshop, American Ambassador Stephen Beecroft affirmed that human trafficking is a world-wide problem that all must work together to address.   He said that “Jordan has recently taken great strides to address human trafficking by passing an anti-trafficking law, instituting domestic worker regulations, and regulating the work of recruitment agencies.”  The Ambassador noted that “these training workshops provide an excellent opportunity to learn from each other as both the United States and Jordan work together to combat human trafficking.”

Approximately 36 judges and 24 prosecutors from Jordan’s twelve governorates are attending these workshops.
