U.S. Co-Organizes Conference on Technology Transfer

October 19, 2009

AMMAN – Under the patronage of H.R.H. Princess Sumaya Bint Al Hassan, a conference entitled “Technology Transfer: Accelerating the Knowledge Economy through the Commercialization of Research and Development” opened October 19 at Al Hassan Scientific City.  In line with U.S. President Obama’s speech in Cairo calling for new partnerships with the Muslim world including Entrepreneurship, Science and Technology, and Research and Development initiatives, this conference is organized by the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in cooperation with Jordan’s Higher Council for Science and Technology and iPark – Information and Communication Technology Business Incubator.

Over the course of three days, conference participants will address technology transfer and the commercialization of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), which are key engines of economic growth in industrial countries and which provide a pipeline for technological innovation and spinning off new technology enterprises. U.S. experts will share their experiences on setting up technology transfer offices to spur entrepreneurship and commercialization.

In opening remarks, U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission Lawrence Mandel noted that this year the United States and Jordan are celebrating 60 years of diplomatic and development ties, which aim to improve the lives of citizens.  He added: “This conference can be a major step forward in building capacity and exploring opportunities in technology transfer that will benefit Jordan and the region, strengthen IPR regimes, and allow for greater commercialization.”

Participants in this conference include representatives from the U.S. and Jordanian governments as well as universities, research institutions, and the private sector.
