Amman – The American Embassy recently presented the Explosives Handling Unit of the Public Security Directorate with a donation of equipment valued at over $80,000 to inspect and detect the illicit smuggling of hazardous materials.  In addition, a group of specialists were trained on the equipment.  An official in the Public Security Directorate said that this equipment will contribute to strengthening the capacity of the Public Security Directorate to investigate the handling of controlled commodities.

The equipment was provided by the U.S. Department of State’s Export Control and Related Border Security (EXBS) Program.  The EXBS Program has been active in Jordan since 2002 and has provided $8 million in assistance during that time.  It represents one aspect of the cooperation between the United States and Jordan in a partnership that spans more than 60 years.  The equipment was handed over by Economic Counselor Natalie E. Brown and EXBS program assistant Kirsten Armstrong
