U.S. Embassy Organizes Community Service Project At Al-Hashemiyeh Traffic Park in Sahab

October 15, 2009

AMMAN – In cooperation with the Greater Amman Municipality, the U.S. Embassy organized a Day of Community Service at Al-Hashemiyeh Traffic Park in Sahab on Thursday, October 15.  Embassy employees planted trees, painted benches, and cleaned up debris at the park.

This unique project, implemented for the first time, is intended to commemorate all those who lost their lives in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States and the horrific Amman hotel bombings of November 9, 2005.  It is representative of the efforts of the U.S Embassy to reciprocate the friendship and kindness of the Jordanian community, and it recognizes the shared desires of Jordanians and Americans to improve the everyday lives of their fellow citizens.

The Day of Community Service is the first phase of a two-part project scheduled to conclude later this year with the donation of new park equipment by the U.S. Embassy and additional community service activities.  That event will cap a year-long celebration of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic and development relations between the United States and Jordan.

Launching the event, U.S. Ambassador Stephen Beecroft said:  “This is a very special day for us, as we work with our Jordanian friends in the spirit of volunteerism and unity.  This event, like that organized by the staff of the Jordanian Embassy in Washington D.C. in August, marks our appreciation for the friendship that has extended between our two countries and peoples for the past sixty years.”

Ms. Tagreed Fakhoury, Greater Amman Municipality Executive Director for Social Affairs and Sustainability, spoke on behalf of the Mayor of Amman, Engineer Omar Maani, and welcomed this joint initiative of “working hand in hand to upgrade services provided to the Jordanian community at large.”

ِAlso participating in the Day of Community Service was U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission Lawrence Mandel, and many volunteers from the U.S. Embassy in Amman.
