The King Hussein Cancer Foundation and Center Hold High-Level Meeting with USAID
January 31, 2012
Amman. The newly-appointed Mission Director of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Beth Paige met with HRH Princess Dina Mired, Director General of the King Hussein Cancer Foundation and Dr. Mahmoud Sarhan, Director General of the King Hussein Cancer Center.
During the high level meeting, the USAID delegation was briefed on the status of cancer care in Jordan, including the awareness-raising efforts of the organizations and the diagnosis and treatment services provided to cancer patients in Jordan and throughout the Arab world. The delegation also toured various departments at the center and viewed state-of-the-art medical equipment that the center was able to purchase as a direct result of a grant provided by USAID in 2011.
HRH Princess Dina recognized USAID for its efforts in supporting the life-saving mission of KHCF, saying: “USAID is our biggest donor. Its immense support has allowed us to maintain excellence in cancer care, bolster breast cancer awareness and research, and provide crucial cancer care to our patients. Our partnership with USAID is a testament to its proven ability to be an unequivocal force for good in the lives of so many people.”
Dr. Mahmoud Sarhan also briefed the delegation on the international standards of comprehensive cancer care achieved by KHCC, and presented plans of the Center’s new expansion project. This new project will enable KHCC to absorb the increasing demand for top quality cancer care in Jordan and the region, and will double the existing Center’s capacity to absorb the rising number of local and regional patients so that no patient is denied the chance for a cure due to lack of space.
Ms. Beth Paige expressed her admiration for KHCC’s excellent services saying, “I am truly impressed with the advanced level of care and distinctive medical capabilities and services provided to patients by KHCC in Jordan.” She also noted the long history of collaboration that USAID has had with the KHCF and KHCC through local currency and grant funds provided in support of KHCF’s endowment, the foundation’s operational expenses, and KHCC’s mission to provide sustained excellence in cancer diagnosis and treatment services.
In 2009, KHCF renamed its medical library after USAID in honor of U.S. Government support received. The ‘USAID Medical Library’ is a vital, valuable, and well-utilized resource for the medical community in the fight against cancer, and provides the largest medical online resources in the world.
