U.S. Provides over $1.3 Million to Support Law Enforcement Programs in Jordan

Tuesday, June 16, 2009.  AMMAN – Affirming the enduring strength of the Jordanian-American partnership, American Ambassador Stephen Beecroft and Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Suhair Al-Ali today signed a grant agreement, under which the United States will provide more than $1.3 million to further develop Jordan’s national law enforcement and criminal justice system capacity.

The funding, which is provided by the U.S. State Department’s International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs Bureau (INL), will support the Government of Jordan in enforcing the protection of intellectual property rights (IPR), empowering the system that combats -money laundering and terrorist financing (AML/CTF) through training and capacity building to all stakeholders, and reducing gender –based violence.

In her remarks during the signing Ceremony, Minister Al-Ali highlighted that U.S. assistance has increased tremendously in recent years; this includes Jordan’s partnership with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA), and the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), in addition to the expanding trade and business relations between the two countries. 

The Minister of Planning and International Cooperation expressed Jordan’s genuine appreciation to the U.S. Government and people for their continuous support to the Kingdom. She emphasized the importance of this agreement in improving the standard of living for all Jordanians. 

The U.S. Ambassador noted that, this year, the United States and Jordan are celebrating the 60th anniversary of diplomatic and development partnership.  He added that this grant is an example of the excellent bilateral cooperation that aims to improve Jordanian lives. He also reiterated the U.S. commitment to support Jordan in achieving its objective of sustainable economic growth and development.  The Ambassador noted that the grant agreement reaffirms our commitment to “working with our Jordanian partners as they strive to build a better future for all Jordanian citizens.”
