September 8, 2009

AMMAN – The Regional Environmental Hub of the Economic Section at the U.S. Embassy in Amman hosted an Iftar on September 7 for its partners in the environmental, health, science and technology sectors.  The Iftar was attended by U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Lawrence C. Mandel; Economic Counselor Natalie E. Brown;  Regional Environment, Science, and Technology Officer Manu Bhalla; and several Embassy staff.

During the Iftar, Mr. Mandel welcomed the guests and noted the strong bilateral cooperation on Environment, Science, Technology, and Health “ESTH” issues, including water resource management, environmental enforcement, science and technology capacity, pandemic preparedness, and increased breast cancer screening and detection.   All of these activities, which aim to improve citizens’ lives, fall under the rubric of expanded partnerships with the Muslim world as outlined by President Obama in his June 4 speech in Cairo.  Mr. Mandel also noted that this year mark the 60th anniversary of U.S.-Jordan diplomatic and development ties.
