July 6, 2009
Amman – In cooperation with the U.S.-based organization Relief International-Schools Online, the U.S. Embassy in Jordan is conducting a two-week Sports Exchange program in Amman from July 1 - 16. The program will foster understanding and friendship between Americans and Jordanians and expand mutual understanding of the importance of sports to youth and for community development.
Five American sports coaches, including former Olympic soccer player John O’Brien, will discuss coaching with representatives of Jordanian health and sports organizations. The coaches will also give coaching seminars for sports educators and work with children aged 8 – 18 to promote sports and health at an early stage in their lives. In addition, a health fair will be held July 9th at Wihdat Club, consisting of lectures, activities, free medical tests and a sports tournament for girls.
Established in 1996, Relief International-Schools Online uses information technology and the internet to empower youth and promote intercultural dialogue. The cultural and sports exchange programs offer students, teachers and coaches the opportunity to meet their peers abroad, learn about the culture and educational practices of their host countries, discuss global issues and participate in service projects. In the past, Schools Online has sent students to and from Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Tajikistan, Jordan, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan and the United States.
