AMMAN During an Iftar hosted by USAID/Jordan for a group of Jordanian youth on Tuesday, September 8, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Amman, U.S. Ambassador to Jordan Stephen Beecroft underlined the importance of youth as the future of Jordan. He noted that youth programs constitute an integral part of the U.S. – Jordanian bilateral partnership, which this year celebrates its 60th anniversary.
In remarks during the Iftar, Ambassador Beecroft said: “Our meeting this evening provides us with an opportunity to hear your views, needs, and goals and your vision for Jordan's future. Direct channels of discussion with youth about Jordan's needs will help us achieve King Abdullah's vision for a prosperous and stable Jordan with a vibrant youth population at its heart."
The Ambassador reviewed USAID – funded programs engaging youth. He also spoke about U.S. exchange programs, including the Fulbright program, Youth Exchanges and Study (YES) programs administered by AMIDEAST, the International Visitor Leadership Program, Citizen Exchanges, Middle East Partnership Initiative programs and sports diplomacy. He pointed out that over the past five years, more than 1,000 Jordanian students have benefited from educational programs funded by American Embassy in Amman.
USAID Mission Director Jay Knott also addressed participants at the Iftar, saying “Youth issues deserve to be in the forefront of public attention and action. Decision-makers and the community at large need to address the needs of youth and actively involve youth in all areas of society.” Mr. Knott then reviewed USAID-funded programs that equip youth with market-ready job skills and practical work experience, help them to lead healthier lives, and promote opportunities for the most disadvantaged of them to participate fully in shaping Jordan’s future. These programs served more than 85,000 youth last year.
Two young women who volunteered for USAID-funded programs in the past - made remarks in English and Arabic on behalf of the Jordanian youth, in which she focused on the role that USAID – funded programs have played in developing communities throughout Jordan. She added that the graduation of qualified and trained young people guarantees a better future for Jordan in line with the King’s vision.
