Recurring Demonstrations at the Syrian Embassy – February 14, 2012

February 14, 2012

Recurring demonstrations have been taking place at the Syrian Embassy, located on Prince Hashem bin al-Hussein Street in the Abdoun District, approximately two kilometers from the U.S. Embassy.  Some demonstrations have been sizable, and minor clashes have occurred between protestors and security forces.  To discourage violence, the Gendarmerie has been deploying large numbers of troops, including special units with anti-riot equipment.

As demonstrations are likely to continue into the near future, to the extent possible U.S. citizens are advised to avoid traveling near the Syrian Embassy.

General Guidance

Protests may take place elsewhere in Amman and in other cities in Jordan.  U.S. citizens are advised to avoid areas where demonstrations are ongoing.  As a reminder, spontaneous and/or planned demonstrations occur in Jordan from time to time in response to world events or local developments.  U.S. citizens are reminded that protests intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence.  U.S. citizens are therefore urged to avoid areas of demonstrations if possible, and to exercise caution if within their vicinity.  As always, please be aware of your surroundings and monitor local media.

U.S. citizens in Jordan are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at the following website: https://travelregistration.state.gov.  U.S. citizens without internet access may enroll directly at the U.S. Embassy.  By enrolling, U.S. citizens make it easier for the Embassy to contact them in case of emergency.
