How to Report the Birth of an American Citizen Abroad

If your child has a possible claim to U.S. citizenship, you may apply for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA).  This is a basic citizenship document that establishes your child's status as an American citizen.  We recommend that you apply for a CRBA as soon as possible after a child's birth; you may also apply for the child's first passport at the same time.  A CRBA can not be issued to a child over the age of 18.

To make an appointment to report the birth of your American Citizen child and apply for his or her first passport, click here:  ACS Appointments.

Appointments for this service are available on Monday and Wednesday mornings.

You may also apply on a walk-in basis during our normal hours of operation, Sunday through Thursday, 9:30 am to 12:30 pm.  However appointments are recommended as walk-in customers may experience extended wait times.

To apply for the CRBA and passport, please bring:

  • Birth certificate issued by the Jordanian authorities with certified English translation. The original Jordanian birth certificate is issued by the Department of Civil Registration (Dairat Al-Ahwal Al-Madaniyyah) on the basis of a “Notification of Birth” form issued by the hospital.

  • The marriage certificate (with certified translation if not in English). If the parents are not married, please ask a consular officer about special requirements.

  • Evidence of the termination of any previous marriages (with certified translation if not in English). Normally, such evidence consists of a divorce order, annulment decree, or death certificate.

  • Evidence of the U.S. citizenship of both parents. Such evidence normally consists of U.S. passports, naturalization certificates or birth certificates from the United States.

    OR

  • If only one parent is a United States citizen, evidence of the American citizen parent’s physical presence in the United States. Such evidence typically consists of old passports and educational records (school or university transcripts).  A Consular Report of Birth Abroad issued for a previous child is also sufficient evidence. The American citizen parent must show:
    • (To report children born after November 14,1986) at least five years of physical presence in the United States, including two years after the age of fourteen
    • (To report children born before November 14,1986) at least ten years of physical presence in the United States, including five years after the age of fourteen.

  • Two passport photographs of the baby. Photographs should be 2” by 2” with a white background and full face. The baby should be clearly identifiable from the photograph.  Please do not digitally alter the photographs.

  • The child being reported, and both parents.  If one parent is not in Jordan, he or she may submit a notarized letter authorizing the other parent to apply for the Consular Report of Birth Abroad and passport. This letter must state the child's name, both parents' names, and must be signed and notarized by a U.S. notary or at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. The Embassy also has a form available for this purpose.

PLEASE NOTE: All documents must be submitted in original or certified copy.

Fees are collected in cash only, either in U.S. dollars or the equivalent in Jordanian dinars.
